Wayland Baptist's J.J. Culver made history Dec. 10 at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas.
Culver set the Sooner Athletic Conference single-game scoring record with the fifth 100-point scoring performance in college basketball history in the Pioneers' 124-60 victory over Southwestern Adventist (Texas).
Culver's 34 field goals became an SAC mark, and his 12-for-33 shooting from 3-point range broke single-game school records. Victor Parrish from Science & Arts of Oklahoma established the previous SAC record by totaling 51 points at Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 13, 1993. Gary Childs held the SAC mark with 21 baskets for Oklahoma Baptist against John Brown on Feb. 15, 1982 in Shawnee, Okla. Roy Young had the highest scoring total for Wayland Baptist of 50 points in 1955-56.
Culver was selected to the NAIA all-star game after becoming a two-time first-team all-conference choice and the 2019 SAC player of the year. Culver led the Pioneers in scoring (23.1 points per game), rebounding (6.4), assists (3.2) and steals (2.71) a game. He finished fifth in career points in Wayland Baptist history with 1,925. Culver, whose father is a pastor, is majoring in religion.
Culver's brother Jarrett led Texas Tech to the 2019 NCAA championship game and became the sixth overall pick of the NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
