OKLAHOMA CITY – Southwestern Assemblies of God's Keaton Dudik collected the Sooner Athletic Conference football offensive player of the year.
League champion OUAZ boasted of SAC special teams player of the year (Shamar Moreland), newcomer of the year (Jermaine Trotman) and coach of the year (Mike Nesbitt). Langston's Malcolm Johnson became SAC defensive player of the year, Arizona Christian's Jon Cole snared athlete of the year and freshman of the year went to Brandon Stephens of Panhandle State.
Dudik boasted of 1,586 yards and 22 touchdowns rushing for Southwestern Assemblies of God this fall. Dudik, a junior from China Springs, Texas, ranked second in the NAIA this year in rushing yards and rushing attempts (238) while ranking third in touchdowns and fourth in yards per game (132.2) on the ground. He amassed 191 yards and two touchdowns vs. Texas Wesleyan on Oct. 9. He posted at least 120 yards rushing in eight contests in 2021.
Johnson put together 63 tackles, 47 solo stops, three passes broken up and three interceptions for Langston this year. Johnson, a sophomore from Houston, made a season-best 15 tackles at OUAZ on Oct. 23 to become SAC defensive player of the week for Oct. 18-24.
Moreland piled up 1,701 all-purpose yards (607 rushing, 172 receiving, 711 on kick returns, 211 punt return yards) in eight games in 2021. Moreland, a senior from Phoenix, reached the end zone four times on returns and averaged 30.9 yards on kick returns and 15.1 yards per punt return. Moreland scored on kick and punt returns in the same game for the second time in his career against Panhandle State on Nov. 13. Moreland, who has 5,387 all-purpose yards, has previously been SAC offensive player of the year and special teams player of the year in his career. Moreland reeled in two SAC special teams player of the week nods in 2021, giving him three such awards in his career.
Cole accumulated 1,278 all-purpose yardage (1,219 receiving and 51 punt return yards) this season. Cole grabbed 81 receptions for 12 touchdowns. Cole, a senior from Dallas, compiled a season-best 198 receiving yards against Southwestern Assemblies of God on Sept. 25 and 15 catches at OUAZ on Oct. 2.
Trotman caught 31 passes for 609 yards and 11 touchdowns this year. Trotman, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., landed conference offensive player of the week for Nov. 1-7 after achieving season highs with eight receptions, 176 yards and three touchdowns receiving at Wayland Baptist on Nov. 6.
Stephens recorded 1,637 yards and 16 touchdowns passing while completing 109 of 192 throws (56.8 percent). Stephens, a freshman from Greenville, Texas, had his season bests with 371 yards and four touchdowns through the air against Arizona Christian on Oct. 30. He surpassed 250 passing yards five times.
Nesbitt nabbed conference coach of the year award and guided the Spirit (8-2, 8-1 SAC) to the league title and an appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series for the second time in three years. OUAZ made the top five in the NAIA this season in average scoring (50.4 points per game, second), yards per game (540.2, second), kick return average (27.2 yards per return, second), points (504, third), average passing yards (340 per game, third), total offense (5,402 yards, fifth). Nesbitt has led OUAZ to a 28-9 mark in four years.
