Top-seeded Mid-America Christian cruised to the Sooner Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament semifinals, while No. 6 seed Texas Wesleyan and No. 7 seed Southwestern Christian moved on after taking penalty-kick shootouts.
Fourth seed John Brown will visit Mid-America Christian at 7 p.m. Monday in one semifinal, while Texas Wesleyan hosts Southwestern Christian in the other semifinal 7 p.m. Monday.
Southwestern Christian 1, Panhandle State 1 (SCU advances 5-4 on penalty kicks)
GOODWELL, Okla. – Paul Richter converted on the crucial penalty kick as Southwestern Christian slipped beyond Panhandle State in the shootout Friday at Anchor D Stadium.
Damnjan Kojic nailed the penalty kick to put the Eagles ahead 2-1 during the shootout. Cheslon Carrollsen evened the shootout count 4-4, but Richter answered for Southwestern Christian (10-6-2).
Panhandle State’s Yannis Sapim provided the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. Southwestern Christian tied the score 1-1 when Muhammed Bilal scored in the 40th minute off Nathaniel Rodriguez’ assist. Southwestern Christian held advantages in shots (14-3) and shots on goal (8-1).
Texas Wesleyan 0, Wayland Baptist 0 (TXWES advances 7-6 on PKs)
PLAINVIEW, Texas – Joep Van Wyk booted through the decisive penalty kick as Texas Wesleyan advanced past Wayland Baptist in a shootout Friday at Hilliard Field.
Van Wky, a freshman from Nootdorp, Netherlands, capitalized after a Wayland Baptist miss. The shootout had been even 6-6 until Van Wky’s PK.
Bastian Blumenberg snared eight saves to maintain the clean sheet for the Rams (9-6-3). Blumenberg made five saves in the second half. Texas Wesleyan’s Jonathan Lopez contributed a defensive save in the 79th minute.
Wayland Baptist owned an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
Mid-America Christian 3, Central Christian 0
OKLAHOMA CITY – Rodrigo Albuquerque struck for the first score of the contest as Mid-America Christian blanked Central Christian 3-0 on Friday night at Dill Field.
The Evangels, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, earned their third shutout of the year. Mid-America Christian (17-0-1) kept Central Christian from attempting a shot while firing 24 shots.
Albuquerque, a senior from Recife, Brazil, knocked his 14th goal of the season through the net in the 12th minute. Cesar Ramirez assisted on the first goal, then set up Mid-America Christian’s second goal scored by Jack Price in the 80th minute. Luan Cesar also notched an assist.
At the 84:33 mark, Ricardo Ferreira registered the goal with an assist by Rodrigo Ferreira for the Evangels.
John Brown 2, Science & Arts 0
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Erick Diaz staked John Brown to the early lead in a 2-0 win over Science & Arts on Friday at Alumni Field.
Diaz recorded his third goal of the year by smacking the ball into the left post from the edge of the penalty box in the 29th minute. The Golden Eagles (8-9) collected their fifth blanking of 2021.
Ivan Garcia supplied John Brown with his first goal of the year by scoring off a free kick to the left pocket of the goal from 25 yards away in the 44th minute. John Brown took 12 shots to Science & Arts’ nine.
