Albuquerque of Mid-America Christian Takes SAC Player of Year

Evangels nab numerous accolades from conference

OKLAHOMA CITY – Mid-America Christian's Rodrigo Albuquerque collected Sooner Athletic Conference men's soccer player of the year.

Mid-America Christian, the SAC regular-season champion, garnered the conference's defensive player of the year (Dejue Johnson), newcomer of the year (Jack Price), goalkeeper of the year (Jeremi Abonnel) and coach of the year (Danny Frid).

The league coaches honored John Brown's Jacob Zamarron as offensive player of the year, Panhandle State's Liam Pritchard as freshman of the year and Science & Arts' Butch Hampton shared the SAC defensive player of the year award with Johnson.

Albuquerque paces the SAC with 15 goals and 38 points to go with eight assists in 2021. Albuquerque, a senior forward from Recife, Brazil, ranks 12th in the NAIA with five winning goals and sixth in shots with 78. Five times Albuquerque has produced two goals in a match this year. He boasted of his season-best performance with five points, two goals and an assist against 22nd-ranked Lyon (Ark.) on Sept. 11. Albuquerque, the 2020-21 SAC co-offensive player of the year, owns three SAC offensive player of the week accolades this year and six SAC weekly honors in his career.

Zamarron delivered 15 goals, which stands tied with Albuquerque for the league lead, while adding four assists and 34 points this season. Zamarron, a junior forward from Rogers, Ark., notched his third career hat trick Oct. 7 at Southwestern Assemblies of God as part of four outings with two or more goals this year. He rates 12th nationally with five game winners. Zamarron, the league offensive player of the year as a freshman, became SAC offensive of the week for Aug. 16-22 to grab the second such accolade of his career.

Hampton keyed Science & Arts to four shutouts and a 1.51 goals-against average on the year. Hampton, a senior defender from Piedmont, Okla., has provided the Drovers with a goal, four assists and six points in 2021. Hampton has been SAC defensive player of the week twice.

Johnson has fueled Mid-America Christian to four blankings and a 0.98 goals-against average this season. Johnson, a senior defender from Lindstead, Jamaica, has posted two assists and two points this year. Johnson swiped three conference defensive player of the week honors in 2021, giving him five for his career.

Price has turned in eight goals, three assists and 19 points for the Evangels this year. Price, a junior from London, England, scored twice against Sterling (Kan.) on Sept. 14 in Oklahoma City. Price grabbed the SAC offensive weekly nod for Sept. 20-26.

Pritchard has tallied nine goals, nine assists and 27 points on the season to lead Panhandle State to its most victories (10) in a season in the program's young history. Pritchard, a freshman from Hartlepool, England, twice had a goal, two assists and four points in a contest this year.

Abonnel has accumulated 40 saves, three shutouts and a 0.99 goals-against average this season. Abonnel, a freshman from Aix-en-Provence, France, snared a season-best seven saves at John Brown on Oct. 23. That same week Abonnel hauled in league defensive player of the week.

Frid brought the Evangels to the SAC regular-season title and the top seed in the SAC Tournament, both firsts in program history. Mid-America Christian has gone 18-0-1, ascended to No. 3 in the NAIA rankings and reached the conference tournament title match for the second consecutive year. Mid-America became the first league regular-season champ to go undefeated in league play at 8-0-1 since Wayland Baptist in 2016. Frid assumed the head-coaching position after being a Mid-America assistant coach the past two years. The SAC honored Frid as player of the year in 2014 competing for Oklahoma City University.
