OKLAHOMA CITY – Shamar Moreland of OUAZ took Sooner Athletic Conference football offensive player of the year to highlight the 2020-21 all-SAC team.
Conference champion Arizona Christian collected defensive player of the year (Riley Tucker), athlete of the year (Jon Cole), newcomer of the year (Shea Morales), freshman of the year (Maurice Powell) and coach of the year (Jeff Bowen).
SAC special teams player of the year went to Austin Bohn from OUAZ to round out the league’s top honors.
Moreland topped the NAIA in all-purpose yards per game (223.2) while ranking third nationally in average rushing yards (134.4) this season. Moreland, a senior from Phoenix, collected 672 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground and 177 yards and two scores receiving on 21 catches. Moreland averaged 22.8 yards per kick return and 14.2 yards on punt returns. Moreland made the all-SAC first team at running back and punt returner while taking second-team all-league acclaim as a kick returner. Moreland, who was a two-time SAC offensive player of the week this season, piled up 199 yards and two touchdowns rushing at Oklahoma Panhandle State on March 13.
Tucker led the NAIA with six interceptions and ranks eighth in the country in passes defended per contest (1.40). Tucker, a sophomore from Burleson, Texas, returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown at OUAZ on March 6 and an interception for a 59-yard touchdown vs. Lyon on March 13. Tucker racked up 59 tackles, 54 solo stops and three tackles for loss this season. He picked up two league defensive player of the week honors.
Bohn posted 43.7 yards a punt for OUAZ to rate second in the NAIA this season. Bohn, a senior from Erie, Colo., had a long punt of 59 yards and at least one 50-yard boot in four of the Spirit’s five games in 2020-21.
Cole ranked No. 1 in the NAIA with 1,631 all-purpose yards while rating second in receiving yards (1,316), receptions (71) and receiving yards a game (131.6). Cole, a senior from Dallas, made 10 touchdown receptions and one rushing touchdown and averaged 18.7 yards on kick returns.
Morales came in 13th with 1,824 yards total offense and 14th with 1,719 yards passing among the NAIA in 2020-21. Morales, a junior from Carlsbad, Calif., completed 147 of 253 pass attempts (58.1 percent) with 11 scoring passes. He added two rushing touchdowns and grabbed SAC offensive player of the week for April 5-11.
Powell supplied Arizona Christian with 65 tackles and 43 solo tackles while leading the SAC in sacks (7½) and ranking second in tackles for loss (11½) in the conference. He recorded two outings with two sacks.
Bowen spearheaded Arizona Christian to its first NAIA Championship Series appearance and SAC championship while going 9-2, 6-0 in league play. The Firestorm, who had 11 first-team all-SAC performers, won their first conference title since 2016. Bowen has guided the Firestorm to a 37-15 mark in five years at the helm.
