Southwestern Assemblies of God Becomes SAC Regular-Season Champion

Lady Lions earn third conference title

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Southwestern Assemblies of God snared the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season volleyball championship with a 20-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday at the Sheaffer Center in a clash of top 25-ranked teams.

Southwestern Assemblies of God, ranked eighth in the NAIA, ran its undefeated record to 28-0, 19-0 in the SAC, while No. 23 Texas Wesleyan went to 23-4, 17-2 SAC.

The Lady Lions won their third SAC regular-season title and their first outright SAC championship. Southwestern Assemblies of God shared the SAC regular-season crown with Oklahoma City University in 2017 and 2018. Southwestern Assemblies of God secured a bid into the NAIA Championships and the top seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament. The conference tournament begins Nov. 8 with the quarterfinals, and the semifinals and championship will be Nov. 11-12 in Waxahachie, Texas.

"Congratulations to our girls on a very hard-fought match tonight," Southwestern Assemblies of God coach Hank Moore said. "These girls showed tremendous grit, and I'm so proud of them. I want to say thank you to Nicholas and Kali for all their hard work. They did a great job tonight, and I'm so proud of them."

Abby Wells delivered 14 kills and two blocks, while Tessa Glick piled up 29 digs for the Lady Lions. Riley Burcham tallied 38 assists, eight digs, three aces and three blocks, and Emma Tompkins added 13 kills and five blocks.

Sydney Alexander provided Texas Wesleyan with 15 kills and seven blocks. Ruby O'Brien turned in 39 assists and nine digs, and Andrea Malek scooped up 23 digs.

Southwestern Assemblies of God concludes the regular season with a 1 p.m. match Saturday against John Brown in Siloam Springs, Ark. The Lady Lions will strive to become the 13th SAC regular-season champion to roll unbeaten through  the conference slate.
