League Introduces SAC Commissioner's Cup

Conference to honor member institution with top finishes in league-sponsored sports

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference is excited to announce the SAC Commissioner’s Cup, an annual symbol of excellence program for the highest performing athletic department.

In an effort to further recognize the achievements of its student-athletes and member institutions, the Sooner Athletic Conference has developed an award for the institution that performs the greatest over the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons.

The SAC Commissioner's Cup will be awarded annually to reward excellence in athletics competing in the league's 16 championships. Member institutions will earn points for their finish of each varsity team in those 16 officially recognized conference sports.

The conference will bestow the first Commissioner's Cup upon the best performing member institution at the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic year.

“We are very excited to implement this program of recognition for Sooner Athletic Conference institutions," said John Martin, SAC Commissioner. "We have prestigious academic and athletic universities in our conference, and the winner of the Commissioner’s Cup will be ranked among the best overall programs in the NAIA.”

League schools will score points towards the Commissioner's Cup with the highest finishing institution in a given sport collecting the maximum possible points followed by the second highest finisher gaining the next highest possible point total in descending order. Points in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball and volleyball will be awarded based upon the regular-season standings. In cross country, golf, track & field and wrestling, scoring will be determined by finish in the conference championship event.

For sports including affiliate members, points will be determined by excluding those per-sport member teams and giving the maximum possible points to the highest finishing SAC full member school; the second highest SAC school receives the second highest possible points for the sport, etc.
