OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference unveiled its 2022 volleyball preseason poll Thursday, and after winning the 2021 SAC Tournament, Southwestern Assemblies of God has been selected as the preseason favorite.
Voted upon by the league’s 11 head coaches, SAGU received 94 points in the poll as well as six of the 11 first-place votes.
The Lady Lions put together a phenomenal run through last season’s SAC Tourney, winning all but one set as SAGU claimed the title after a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Wayland Baptist inside Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City on Nov. 13.
The 2021 SAC regular-season champion Texas Wesleyan finished in a close second with 91 points to go three first-place nods, while Oklahoma City tallied 87 points and two first-place tallies.
Securing the next three spots in the poll were Wayland Baptist with 68 points, John Brown with 63 and Oklahoma Panhandle State with 57. Mid-America Christian and Langston rounded out the top eight with 51 and 32 points.
The final three places in the preseason ranking belonged to Science & Arts with 30 points, Southwestern Christian with 21 and Central Christian, which closed it out with 11 points.
The SAC Tournament will be held from Nov. 8-12 with the top four seeds hosting the quarterfinal round. The semifinals and championship matches will be hosted at the Sheaffer Center on the campus of Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie, Texas on Nov. 11-12.
