Southwestern Assemblies of God takes road quarterfinal win

Top seed Langston moved onto the semifinals of the Oklahoma Ford Dealers Sooner Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament Thursday. 

Southwestern Assemblies of God, the fifth seed, became the lone road team to prevail in the quarterfinals. The semifinals will take place Monday at the Gaulke Activity Center at Mid-America Christian, featuring Langston against Southwestern Assemblies of God at 6 p.m. and No. 2 Wayland Baptist taking on No. 3 Oklahoma City University at 8 p.m. 

Southwestern Assemblies of God 100, Science & Arts 92 

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Southwestern Assemblies of God outlasted Science & Arts 100-92 on Thursday at Drover Fieldhouse. 

Cortland Blake had a crucial jumper and 3-pointer to respond to Cejay Mann’s trey that sliced the Lions’ edge to 86-85 with 4:12 left. Blake turned in season highs with 31 points and five 3-pointers along with seven rebounds. 

The Lions (20-9) produced their third 100-point performance of the season, erasing a seven-point first-half deficit. Southwestern Assemblies of God reeled off a 14-0 surge capped by Blake’s transition bucket that put his team ahead 39-32 with 6:03 left in the first period. 

Samkelo Sele topped Science & Arts (17-12) with 28 points and six rebounds. 

Langston 80, John Brown 53 

LANGSTON, Okla. – Langston tallied the game’s first nine points in an 80-53 victory over John Brown on Thursday at C. Felton Gayles Gymnasium. 

A.J. Rainey spearheaded fifth-ranked Langston with 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists while downing six 3-pointers. Cortez Mosley contributed 17 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Lions (27-2). 

Langston collected its first win in the SAC Tournament and first conference tournament win since March 2, 2018. James Beckom posted 19 points and eight rebounds for John Brown (12-17).  

Wayland Baptist 89, Southwestern Christian 79 

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist boasted of six double-digit scorers in an 89-79 win over Southwestern Christian on Thursday at the Hutcherson Center. 

The Pioneers (22-7) racked up their 12th win in 13 games as Manny Crump led Wayland Baptist with 14 points while grabbing six rebounds off the bench. Wayland Baptist unleashed a 7-0 run that held off Southwestern Christian, which cut its deficit to 67-65 on Jordan Williams’ dunk. Jaxon Recer’s jam finished off the Pioneer surge and increased the margin to 74-65 at the 7:25 mark. 

Williams supplied Southwestern Christian (12-14) with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. 

Oklahoma City 90, Texas Wesleyan 80 

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University eliminated Texas Wesleyan from the SAC Tournament 90-80 on Thursday at the Eagles Nest. 

Avery Jackson notched 25 points and eight rebounds for his fifth 25-point outing of the season for Oklahoma City (17-12).  

The Stars rolled to a 13-0 run late in the first half that put OCU ahead 37-34 at the 4:26 mark. Dravon Clayborn sparked OCU with three consecutive treys. 

Clayborn provided the Stars with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Akili Vining totaled 15 points and two steals for Texas Wesleyan (14-15).
