SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Brooklyn Hendricks and Katherine Keys each scored a pair of goals to lead top-seeded John Brown to a 6-2 victory over No. 2 seed Science & Arts to claim their fifth consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship on Monday evening at Alumni Field in Siloam Springs, Ark. This is the seventh time that the Golden Eagles have won the league’s post-season tournament in program history.
John Brown got out of the gate in a hurry as Aubrey Winter slotted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal 39 seconds into the match to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Hendricks scored her first goal of the night and the season as she chipped a shot from 24 yards out on the right wing that clipped the pipe on the left side and bounced in at the 23:23 mark of the half to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Keys opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a goal into the lower right side of the goal to push the lead to 3-0. The Drovers cut the advantage to 3-1 as Paula Casajus scored off a pass from Chiara Schillinger in the 60th minute, but John Brown answered 51 seconds later as Hendricks scored her second goal of the night to make the score 4-1. Keys then completed her brace in the 69th minute as she scored off a pass from Lauren Walters to push the lead to 5-1. Ilse de Jong cut the advantage to 5-2 in the 72nd minute as she found the upper right side of the goal from 20 yards out. Walter added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to give John Brown the title.
The 19th-ranked Golden Eagles (14-5-1) outshot the Drovers 23-12 in the match with 15 of those shots being on frame as Hendricks had five shots on the night. Julia Lambert had three assists in the contest while Elise Bosma had a pair of helpers. Marely Fonseca gained the win in goal with three saves.
The 21st-ranked Drovers (17-2-1) offense was paced by de Jong with three shots with three other players finishing the contest with two shots a piece.
John Brown has earned the league automatic berth into the 2024 NAIA Women’s Soccer Tournament with the win while Science & Arts will await to hear their name called during the NAIA selection show on Saturday, Nov. 16, that will be aired at 1 p.m. on the NAIA YouTube Channel.
