– At Wayland Baptist, we strive to spread the love of Jesus in everything we do. Whether it’s worshipping in chapel, competing in sports, or going on mission trips, we are looking to be “Pioneers” at the forefront of spreading the Word.
Back in July, Wayland Baptist Softball players Cayman Ivins, Kamila Ochoa, and Mikenzi Carlo were three of 11 WBU students who traveled to Ninilchik, Alaska to host a week-long sports camp for the local children – teaching drills in the afternoon and sharing Jesus every step of the way.
“I first learned about the Alaska trip through Missions Chapel, listening to Wayland students and Donnie Brown share about their past experiences,” said Ivins. “That inspired me to pursue attending the Christian sports camp for kids in Alaska with Alaska Missions, led by Brenda Crim. Alaska Missions and our goal was to meet needs, break down walls, and share the gospel.”
Throughout the week, the mission’s team would focus on two main tasks: helping with community service projects to support Alaska Missions and running a Christian sports camp. From painting buildings and leading devotionals to praying with kids and seeing smiles in the middle of hard circumstances – this trip was about more than just ministry. It was transformation.
Ivins spoke about the transformative trip, “The trip was filled with “God moments”—times when we could truly feel the presence of Christ in our work and in nature. We explored Alaska’s breathtaking scenery, from glaciers to kayaking adventures, and saw incredible wildlife. One of my favorite moments came on the final day, singing worship songs with kids I had connected with over the week to show off to their families, after we were able to meet their families, and share how proud we were of them—bringing a light to families who may not experience that often.”
On the final day of the trip, eight children decided to make the exciting decision and give their life to Christ. The WBU students and those children got to celebrate their life-changing decision with their families, which was an eye-opening experience just seeing the joy it brought to these kids.
Ivins and her teammates are eager to attend the Alaska Missions next year after seeing the way God has transformed their lives, “Spiritually, this trip brought me closer to Christ and strengthened the connections within our group. I came home with a deeper sense of purpose in my faith and a desire to return next summer with Kenzi and Kami to further pursue helping Alaska Missions.”
