OCU Captures Seventh Consecutive SAC Title

Pearson of John Brown takes second straight individual conference crown

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University snatched up its seventh Sooner Athletic Conference women's cross country championship in a row Saturday at Eldon Lyon Park.

John Brown's Allika Pearson earned a repeat individual title. Six Stars earned all-SAC accolades. OCU runners took three of the top five spots and four of the top 10 positions in the 5,000-meter race.

Pearson captured the top podium spot with a finish of 18 minutes, 34 seconds. Pearson, a senior from Siloam Springs, Ark., qualified for her third straight trip to the NAIA Championships. Pearson became the first repeat SAC champion since Oklahoma City's Aminat Olowora won the 2016 and 2017 individual titles. Pearson now has four top podium finishes in five meets on the season.

In the team race, Wayland Baptist finished second with three all-conference performers. Teresha Jacobs posted a second-place showing with a mark of 18:54.9. Michelle Sanchez of the Pioneers reeled in ninth, while Michaela Phipps grabbed 11th.

OCU's Sharon Koima posted a third-place finish, while Jacinda Kwambai grabbed fourth. Macey Currie of the Stars rounded out the top five, and Cailen Jolley reeled in 10th.

Elizabeth Heffernan of Oklahoma City ended up in 14th, and Katlyn Davenport finished 15th to snag the final all-conference spot. OCU coach Frezer Legesse took SAC coach of the year.

The Stars secured the conference's bid to the NAIA Championships on Nov. 19 in Vancouver, Wash.

Pearson averages a 5,000 meter time of 18:11, her fastest entering the national meet in her career. Last season, she became the program's first NAIA All-American with a fifth-place finish in a current program record time of 17:46.

Koima, a sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, completed the run in 19 minutes, 0.8 seconds. Koima collected an all-conference nod and top-five finish for the second consecutive year. She averaged 6:06.8 per mile.

Kwambai, a junior from Kapsowar City, Kenya, turned in a mark of 19:07.5 to nab her second all-SAC honor. Currie, a senior from Oklahoma City, crossed the finish line in 19:08.4 while becoming a three-time all-conference performer with her second top-10 showing in the conference meet.
