SAC Announces Men's Student-Athletes of Year

These top student-athletes enter consideration for overall male student-athlete of year

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference revealed its 2020-21 men’s student-athletes of the year for each league-sponsored sport.

Sports information directors around the SAC nominated and voted upon the candidates. The minimum criteria for nomination was inclusion on the academic all-conference team. Voting was based upon the candidates' academic and athletic accomplishments.

These elite student-athletes are entered into a ballot for the overall SAC male academic student-athlete of the year presented by Barnes & Noble College.

BASEBALL

PEYTON CRISPIN | OKLAHOMA CITY

Sr. | OF | Lookeba, Okla.

Peyton Crispin has produced a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average while studying exercise & sport science. Crispin turned in a .337 batting average with seven home runs, 24 RBIs and seven stolen bases over the previous season. His career stats include a .358 average, 17 homers, 86 RBIs, 43 doubles, 153 hits and 14 steals. Crispin has been honored as first-team all-Sooner Athletic Conference, CoSIDA academic all-American, two-time CoSIDA academic all-district, two-time NAIA scholar-athlete, two-time SAC scholar-athlete, two-time academic all-SAC and three-time commissioner’s honor roll. 

BASKETBALL

CAMERON HINES | SCIENCE & ARTS

Sr. | G | Fort Cobb, Okla.

Cameron Hines had a tremendous 2020-21 season on and off the court. Hines earned a second-team All-American selection, first-team All-SAC and SAC Tournament MVP as the Drovers won the SAC Tournament championship. This season alone, Hines averaged 17.6 points per game, which led the team and ranked sixth in the SAC. The sharpshooter knocked down 40 percent of his 3-point attempts and converted on 86 percent of his free-throw shots. Hines will go down as one of the greatest players in S&A men's basketball history. Since the Fall of 2018, Hines has played in 85 games, recording 1,219 points, 299 assists, and 260 rebounds. Hines is only the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. In the classroom, Hines earned a 4.0 GPA during the academic year and a 3.67 cumulative GPA, earning SAC commissioner's honor roll and SAC scholar-athlete honors. He is a three-time academic all-SAC choice. 

CROSS COUNTRY

DENNIS KIPTOO | WAYLAND BAPTIST

Jr. | Kenya

A business administration/accounting major from Kenya, Dennis Kiptoo placed third in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships and went on to finish 18th at the NAIA Championships. The national finish meant a second NAIA all-American honor for Kiptoo, who placed ninth a year earlier. He went on to finish third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Kiptoo has a 2.79 cumulative GPA and recorded a 3.50 GPA during the 2020-21 academic year.

FOOTBALL

AUSTIN BOHN | OUAZ

Sr. | P | Erie, Colo.

Austin Bohn maintained a 3.57 GPA as a Pre-Med graduate student this past year after earning a major in biology with a minor in psychology. Bohn finished second in the NAIA with an average of 44.1 yards per punt with six punts of 50-plus yards and five ending inside the opponent 20-yardline. He is a three-time AFCA-NAIA All-American – including making the first team in 2020 – and has been named the SAC special teams player of the year the past two seasons. Bohn was also the 2019-20 SAC football student-athlete of the year.

GOLF

DAVID MEYERS | OKLAHOMA CITY

Sr. | Johannesburg, South Africa

David Meyers recorded a 3.44 cumulative grade-point average studying advertising. Meyers topped the NAIA with a 69.40 scoring average while collecting six wins in six tournaments in 2020-21. Meyers broke 70 13 times in 25 rounds, including a 32-30–62 in the second round of the U.C. Ferguson Classic on April 12 at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City to match the finest round by a Star. Meyers established OCU records with his season scoring average, career stroke average (70.33), 11 career victories, six consecutive wins and six victories in a season. He turned in 15 consecutive top-five finishes. Meyers became the 2020-21 Jim Wade Award winner and the Stars' seventh four-time men's golf all-American. In his OCU career, Meyers boasts of being a four-time Golf Coaches Association of America all-American, three-time NAIA all-American, two-time Sooner Athletic Conference men's golfer of the year, three-time all-SAC, three-time all-region, two-time all-tournament in the SAC Championships, all-tournament in the NAIA Championships, six-time SAC player of the week, two-time NAIA player of the week, CoSIDA academic all-American, CoSIDA academic all-district, SAC men's golf student-athlete of the year, two-time academic all-SAC and four-time SAC commissioner's honor roll. Meyers spearheaded the Stars to three SAC crowns and the 2018 national championship.

SOCCER

VICTOR ARIAS | SOUTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN

Sr. | F | Barinas, Venezuela

Victor Arias has achieved a 3.5 cumulative GPA as a kinesiology major at Southwestern Christian. Arias guided SCU to their first ever regular-season SAC championship, and first ever appearance at the NAIA Championships. He is a two-time representative on the SAC Scholar-Athlete list, as well as a two-time representative on the NCCAA Scholar-Athlete list. In the historic 2020-21 season, Arias notched 18 goals and six assists and garnered SAC player of the year, league offensive player of the year and two SAC offensive player of the week awards. Those numbers would be good for second in the SAC in points (32) and third in goals scored. He has also moved into the top 10 all-time at SCU in points and goals scored in a career.

TRACK & FIELD

KIPRUTO CHERUTICH | OKLAHOMA CITY

Sr. | Distance | Iten, Kenya

Kipruto Cherutich produced a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average while attaining a master's degree in non-profit leadership. Cherutich captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase national championship in the NAIA men's outdoor track & field championships May 28 in Gulf Shores, Ala. He notched his personal-best time in the event (8 minutes, 55.60 seconds). Cherutich seized his second all-American acclaim after finishing seventh in the 3,000 meters in the 2020 NAIA indoor track & field championships. In his OCU career, Cherutich scooped up two all-American honors, an all-Sooner Athletic Conference cross country honor, two NAIA scholar-athlete nods, two conference scholar-athlete awards, two academic all-conference accolades and 2019-20 SAC men's track & field student-athlete of the year.

WRESTLING

MONTANA MOON | OKLAHOMA CITY

Sr. | 125 lbs. | Chickasha, Okla.

Montana Moon had a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average majoring in criminal justice. Moon won the 2020 125-pound Sooner Athletic Conference championship. Moon is a two-time national qualifier and conference finalist with a 45-23 career mark. He became a two-time academic all-SAC honoree. He intends to become a police officer.
