OKLAHOMA CITY – After completing his ninth year as the head athletic trainer at Mid-America Christian University, the Sooner Athletic Conference is proud to announce that Justin Gordon has been selected as the league’s Athletic Trainer of the Year.
Since the introduction of the award in 2020, Gordon is the third recipient of the distinguished award that is voted upon by the league’s athletic trainers.
“I am honored to be selected by my peers in a conference full of some amazing athletic trainers,” said Gordon. “With hosting the basketball conference tournaments, the men’s soccer conference tournament and all of our programs making postseason play, it was a very busy year for MACU. Putting in the hard work and dedication is made easier with such great support and relationships from the entirety of our athletics department as well as the MACU community. Thank you all.”
Also serving as the program’s Assistant Athletic Director, Gordon has been instrumental in providing high-quality medical assistance for the Evangels’ seven athletic programs.
“Justin is a terrific advocate for our students and an unbelievable co-worker,” said MACU Athletic Director Marcus Moeller. “I am so thankful to see the conference recognize what we have always known: Justin is a star in the business of small college athletics and we are incredibly thankful to have him at MACU.”
With a busy postseason schedule, Gordon got the opportunity to travel with five of the programs to their respective championship events to provide caregiving functions, which included the men’s soccer NAIA Opening Round in Costa Mesa, Calif., the women’s basketball NAIA Opening Round in Wichita, Kan., the volleyball National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division I National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo., as well as the baseball and softball NCCAA World Series in Kansas City, Mo.
Gordon spearheaded the athletic training functions in three SAC Championships, including the men’s soccer title hosted at the Dill Soccer Field on Nov. 11, 2021 as well as the men’s and women’s basketball championships inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1.
Gordon provides top-of-the-line care operating out of the university’s O’Brien Family Training Center, an 18,600-square-foot facility that houses state-of-the-art athletic training equipment that opened its doors on July 7, 2021.
