OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its 2021-22 men’s and women’s basketball scholar-athletes, presented by Barnes & Noble College on Wednesday as a combined 75 earned the academic honor.
To be eligible for SAC scholar-athlete accolades, a student-athlete must be at least a junior in academic standing while maintaining no lower than a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average. Athletes also must have attended the nominating institution for at least two years as a non-transfer or one year as a transfer and be on the program’s NAIA eligibility certificate.
Overall, there were 52 women and 23 men that received the academic achievement between the league’s 12 basketball programs.
On the men’s side, John Brown boasted the most scholar-athletes with four while Mid-America Christian and SAC regular season and tournament champion Southwestern Assemblies of God each placed three on the list. UNT-Dallas’ Larry Rusk was the lone student-athlete to finish the academic year with an unblemished 4.0 cumulative grade-point average.
In women’s basketball, Southwestern Christian assembled an incredible group academically with a league-best 15 scholar-athletes while also touting nine of the 11 players in SAC with a 4.0 GPA. The Golden Eagles also performed well in the classroom with eight student-athletes earning the academic acclaim.
