Oklahoma City – After leading the John Brown University women’s basketball team to their first regular season Sooner Athletic Conference championship, Tarrah Stephens was named the SAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year as announced by the conference office Friday afternoon.
Jeff Soderquist of John Brown was named the SAC Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Eagles to the first undefeated conference record since 2012-13.
Megan Nestor of Wayland Baptist earned the Defensive Player of the Year while Bobbie Fouquet of Wayland Baptist was named the conference Freshman of the Year. Agar Farres Garcia of Southwestern Assemblies of God was named this year’s Newcomer of the Year while Rylee Lavender of SAGU earned the Sixth Woman of the Year Honor with Camryn Armes of Mid-America Christian garnering the conference Sportsmanship Award.
Stephens paced the Golden Eagles by scoring 15.9 points per game this season while grabbing 7.1 rebounds per contest. Stephens was also outstanding from the charity stripe as she was 103-for-129 this season for 79 percent.
Nestor led the Flying Queens this season as she had a league-high 13.1 rebounds per game with 6.8 rebounds on the defensive side. Nestor also had two steals per contest as Wayland Baptist held their opponents to 61 points per contest this season.
Fouquet was another key player for the Flying Queens as she averaged 10.5 points per game while hitting 41 triples on the year for an average of 1.5 made three-point goals per contest.
Garcia was a main player for SAGU as she averaged 11.4 points per game while gathering 12.8 rebounds per contest which was second in the conference this season.
Lavender had an outstanding season coming off the bench for the Lions as she averaged 10.6 points per game while hitting 55 three-point goals this year.
Armes earned the conference Sportsmanship Award from the coaches as she was a great example of how to conduct herself on the court during the season.
Soderquist led John Brown to an undefeated 22-0 record in the conference which is the most league wins ever as the Golden Eagles are ranked 13th in the country in the final NAIA National Coaches Poll.
