OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist's Luis Vargas took Sooner Athletic Conference baseball player of the year for the second year in a row.
Science & Arts' Colton Williams hauled in SAC pitcher of the year for the third consecutive year, and Mike Ross picked up conference coach of the year for the fourth year in a row.
Vargas has been the NAIA's premier offensive force in 2021, leading the country in home runs (29), total bases (191), slugging percentage (1.098), homers per game (0.64), RBIs a game (1.71), average hits (1.89) and total bases a contest (4.24).
Vargas, a junior outfielder from Boston, has produced a .489 batting average, 77 RBIs, 59 runs scored, 85 hits, 13 doubles and three triples. Vargas crushed three homers in one game twice, notched four hits four times and drove in a season-high seven runs against Oklahoma City University on April 18. He has hammered three home runs four times in his Wayland Baptist career. Vargas became SAC and NAIA player of the week for April 12-18 to give him four weekly awards from the conference as a Pioneer. Vargas drew attention prior to 2021 as an preseason NAIA all-American and inclusion on the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list.
Williams tops the NAIA in victories (12) while ranking fourth nationally in earned run average (1.59) in 2021. Williams, a senior left-hander from Magnolia, Texas, has amassed a 12-0 record, six complete games, two shutouts and 87 strikeouts in 73.2 innings this year. Williams, a preseason all-American, grabbed two SAC pitcher of the week nods this season to bring his career total to seven league hurler of the week accolades. Williams remains undefeated in a Science & Arts uniform with a 33-0 mark, 1.32 ERA, 14 complete games, five shutouts and 259 strikeouts in 212 innings in his career.
Ross guided the Drovers to their third consecutive league regular-season championship on the last day of the regular season. Science & Arts (33-10, 20-4 SAC) swept a twin bill from Oklahoma City to secure the SAC regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament. Ross has directed Science & Arts to a 459-197 mark with four SAC regular-season crowns and three conference tournament titles in his 13th season as head coach.
