Nelson and Texas Wesleyan Move on to the 2025 SAC Volleyball Championship Match

Fort Worth, Texas – The top seeds in the 2025 Sooner Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament both used great hitting and solid defense as they both swept their opponents to advance to the conference championships after action on Friday evening at the Sid Richardson Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
 
No. 1 Nelson 3, No. 5 Panhandle State 0
 

Nelson broke out to an early lead in the opening set by having a .255 hitting percentage as the top-seeded Lions defeated Panhandle State 3-0 in the first conference semifinal on Friday evening.
 
The Lions used an 11-4 run midway through the first set on the power of 13 kills on 31 total attacks with only two errors in the set as Nelson won the opener 25-14. The Lions continued to hit well in the second set as they once again had 13 kills on 26 attacks with four errors for a hitting percentage of .346 to take the set 25-19 and grab a 2-0 advantage. Nelson used a fast start in the third set as they took a 7-1 lead and never looked back as they had a .229 hitting percentage to win the final set 25-14.
 
Nelson finished the match with 40 kills on 105 total attacks and nine errors for a hitting percentage of .295, with Alexandra Bonnett leading the way with 11 kills, while Taylor Cavazos added 20 assists, with Maci Sons contributing with 10 digs as the Lions improved to 24-9 on the year. 
 
The Aggies finished the match with 33 kills on 118 total attacks with 22 errors for a hitting percentage of .093, with Elena Kagiali pacing the Panhandle State attack with 11 kills, while Mia Sanchez handed out 22 helpers, with Winiffer Rodriguez adding 16 digs as the Aggies ended their season with an overall record of 16-15.
 
No. 2 Texas Wesleyan 3, No. 6 Oklahoma City 0
 
Texas Wesleyan needed a pair of big scoring runs in the first two sets and a solid defensive effort in the third set to sweep Oklahoma City 3-0 in the second semifinal on Friday evening.

The opening set saw both teams stay to within three points of each other until the Rams scored the final four points of the set to take the opening set 25-21. In the set, Texas Wesleyan had 14 kills on 28 total attacks with only one error for a .464 hitting percentage. The Rams took control of the second set after Oklahoma City tied the frame at 6-6, when the Rams went on a 13-1 run to take a 19-7 advantage. The Stars had a few mini runs to battle back, but the Rams held on to win 25-17 and take a 2-0 match advantage. The final set saw the Rams go out to an early lead of 12-8 and was able to extend the lead to 18-13 before scoring four of the final six points to win the set 25-18 and clinch their ticket to the final.
 
The Rams finished the match with 38 kills on 99 total attacks with 10 errors for a hitting percentage of .283 for the match. Hanna Rubis, Lyric Biggier, and Sydney Alexander each had eight kills in the match, while Ruby Rumohr added 16 assists, with Emily Lewis having 11 digs as the Rams improved to 25-6.
 
The Stars completed the match with 31 kills on 103 total attacks and 21 errors for a .097 hitting percentage, with Grace Smallwood leading the attack with 12 kills, while Natalie Adams handed out 27 assists, with Smallwood also adding 11 digs as the Stars ended their season with an overall record of 17-13.
 
Nelson and Texas Wesleyan advance to the championship match that will be held in the Sid Richardson Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday evening, starting at 6 p.m. The two teams are no strangers when it comes to playing in the championship match, as this will be the third straight season that the two rivals have met in the final. The Rams have won the previous two meetings.
