Oklahoma City – The top four seeds in the 2025 Sooner Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament moved on to the league semifinal round after an exciting night of first-round matches.
No. 1 Oklahoma City 5, No. 8 Panhandle State 1
After surrendering an early goal, Oklahoma City scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Panhandle State at Brian Harvey Field in Oklahoma City, Tuesday evening.
The Aggies opened the scoring as Othman Gherab found the net in the fifth minute to put Panhandle State on top 1-0. The Stars drew the match even in the 11
th minute as Francisco Miquel converted a penalty kick following a foul in the box to make the score 1-1. Juan Erazo put the Stars ahead for good in the 44
th minute as he scored off passes from Harrison Knight and Ethan Taylor to make the score 2-1.
Oklahoma City then scored three times in the second half as Miquel found the net for the second time in the 58
th minute, while Taylor added a goal just over a minute later to make the score 4-1. Sage Trevino added the final score of the night in the 83
rd minute to propel the Stars to the victory.
Oklahoma City outshot Panhandle State 16-10 in the match as Erazo led the attack with four shots. Vittorio Di Carlo earned the win in goal for the Stars with a save as Oklahoma City improved to 12-3-4 on the year. Gherab led three other Aggies with a pair of shots on the evening as Panhandle State finished the season with a record of 6-6-5.
No. 2 John Brown 3, No. 7 Texas Wesleyan 1
The Golden Eagles need a pair of goals from Amaury Jarry in the final 15 minutes of the match to defeat Texas Wesleyan 3-1 at Alumni Field in Siloam Springs, Ark., on Tuesday evening.
After playing to a 0-0 draw in the first 45 minutes, Alejandro Gallardo scored off a pass from Constantin Bauer in the 49th minute to give John Brown a 1-0 lead. The Rams did not wait long to even the contest as Fabricio Martinez scored off passes from Louis Guffroy and Rudy Gonzalez in the 55
th minute to put the score at 1-1.
The match would remain tied until the 75
th minute, when Jarry collected a long pass from Steven Cisneros and placed a chip shot over the Rams’ goalkeeper into the center of the goal to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 advantage. Jarry added an insurance goal in the 87
th minute as he slotted a shot of a centering pass from Ransford Okyere into the lower left side of the goal to put John Brown ahead 3-1.
The Golden Eagles held a 19-6 edge in shots, with Jarry and Gallardo each having five shots apiece. Adam Tebbs earned the win in goal for the Golden Eagles with a save to help John Brown improve to 11-3-4 on the year. Martinez paced the Texas Wesleyan offense with three shots as the Rams completed the season with a record of 9-10-0.
No. 3 Mid-America Christian 3, No. 6 Southwestern Christian 0
The Evangels scored an early goal and then added two more early in the second half to claim a 3-0 win over Southwestern Christian at Dill Soccer Field in Oklahoma City, Tuesday night.
Josh Macklin opened the scoring as he took passes from Diego Sano and Matias Garcia in the 10
th minute to put Mid-America Christian on top 1-0. The score remained that way until Christian Haruya Higuchi scored off a pass from Macklin in the 55
th minute to push the lead to 2-0. Jimmy Cabrera secured the win for Mid-America Christian in the 57th minute as he scored passes from Macklin and Sano to make the score 3-0.
The Evangels outshot the Eagles 16-5 in the contest with Papa Toure and Carlos Lobo each having four shots, while Dante Caffaro earned the win in goal with two saves as Mid-America Christian improved to 8-704 on the year. Otavio Avila paced the Southwestern Christian attack with two shots as the Eagles finished the season with a record of 7-5-5.
No. 4 Wayland Baptist 1, No. 5 Nelson 0
In a defensive battle, Wayland Baptist scored in the early portion of the second half and held on to claim a 1-0 victory over Nelson at Hillard Field in Plainview, Texas, to open the first round of the tournament.
After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers cracked the scoreboard in the 54
th minute as Max Campos collected an errant pass and fired a shot from 15 yards out past the Lions’ goalkeeper into the left corner of the goal to give Wayland Baptist a 1-0 advantage. That is all that the Pioneers would need, as their defense was able to hold on as Wayland Baptist goalkeeper Alex Neri made four saves over the final 36 minutes to help the Pioneers advance to the conference semifinals for the second consecutive season.
The Pioneers held a 10-7 edge on shots, with Francis Motsi having seven of those while Niklas Thiel added a pair of shots in the win. Neri collected the win for Wayland Baptist with four saves in the match as the Pioneers improved to 9-5-2 on the year. Yael Sandoval paced the Lions’ attack with two shots in the loss, as Nelson finished the season with a record of 8-8-3.
The semifinals will take place on Friday, November 7, as Wayland Baptist will travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Stars in a 2 p.m. start. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in their regular-season match back on October 21. John Brown will welcome Mid-America Christian to Siloam Springs, Ark., in the second semifinal that will start at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles claimed the regular season contest against the Evangels 2-0 back on October 25.
