Oklahoma City - The Sooner Athletic Conference will be well represented at the 44
th NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Langston and Mid-America Christian advanced to the final site after winning their regionals this past weekend.
Both teams are making their first trips to the final site in program history and as they both take part in the round of 16 for the first time.
The Lions are the No. 4 seed in the Naismith Quadrant and moved on to the final site after winning a pair of games on their home court in Langston, Okla. The Lions opened tournament play with a 61-59 victory over No. 13 seed Blue Mountain Christian in overtime as Mikayla Woods led four players in double digits with 12 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
Langston then punched their ticket to the final site with a 79-68 win over No. 5 seed Dakota Wesleyan as Woods poured in 20 points while Jordynn Conner chipped in with 18 markers and six boards in the win.
Mid-America Christian took a road trip to Olathe, Kan., as the No. 7 seed for the first and second rounds and had a successful weekend. The Evangels open the tournament with a 73-63 victory over No. 7 Northwestern as Shy Christopher led all scorers with 30 points while Syncere Harrod added 13 points with Kylee Scheer chipping in with 10 points and 13 boards in the win.
The Evangels then moved on to the postseason tournament with a 94-74 win over No. 15 seed Kansas Wesleyan as Christopher scored 40 points with seven rebounds while Scheer scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high 11 caroms in the victory.
Action at the Tyson Event Center will begin on Thursday, March 20, as Langston will face off against the No. 1 seed in the Naismith Quadrant, Dordt, in a 6 p.m. start.
The Evangels will start play in the Round of 16 on Friday evening as they will match up against the No. 3 seed in the Duer Quadrant, Briar Cliff, in an 8 p.m. tip.
